Pro Wrestling Lives!
On Saturday Night, my brother and I watched some boxing on HBO. It was a heavyweight match, which I usually enjoy, and there was a knock out scored, which I always enjoy. But it was a sloppy fight and it suddenly became easy to see why the current generation of 18-34 year old male sports fans are taking to MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) instead of Boxing. In fact, Dana White, the owner of the UFC (ultimate Fighting Championships) insists that MMA will surpass and bury boxing in short time. In the course of the conversation, I mentioned that I was still a fan of Pro Wrestling (yes, I know it’s fake) and mentioned how they’ve tried to get some submission wrestling popular again, perhaps since that’s what the MMA is making popular. My brother laughed, and scoffed that as soon as MMA takes over boxing, it will eclipse Pro Wrestling as well. I know that ‘real’ sports are always more interesting than ‘fake’ ones. Certainly, I’d rather watch a ‘real’ fight than a choreographed one. Once. But a night of wrestling versus a night of MMA? It’s ridiculous to say that MMA will make wrestling disappear. Let me tell you why: 1) Mixed Martial Arts appeals to a specific fan. A specific fan looking for a specific type of show. Pro wrestling intentionally puts different types of matches on a show so that no one is seeing the same thing over and over again. The shows are also peppered with interviews, vignettes and scripted altercations. Inevitably, almost ANYone can find SOMEONE (or something) they like about the show. 2) Wrestling has ‘characters’. MMA has a few fighters who are characters in their own right…but once the bell rings they do what they do which is fight and survive. Some wrestlers are entertaining actors as well as wrestlers. 3) MMA guys don’t fall off of tables, don’t fall thru tables, and don’t get hit with chairs. Well, not in the ring. 4) If an MMA fight has a slow pace, it’s gonna be a slow paved fight for some time. At any given point, 2 wrestlers can (and should) read the crowd and change the pace of their match. That’s called smart ring generalship. 5) An MMA match, that you’ve waited 2 months to see, can end in 30 seconds. Then you feel like you’ve been completely ripped off. If a Pro Wrestling match ends in 30 seconds, it means someone REALLY screwed up…and that’s usually entertaining in it’s own right. 6) MMA ring girls threaten to show their cleavage. WWE Divas really do it. In short, a Pro Wrestling show, (if booked correctly), offers many different things at once…appealing to a larger crowd. Any relevant issues that are happening ‘in the public eye’ can become fodder for a Pro Wrestling storyline. MMA doesn’t have storylines…just 2 guys fighting. Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE watching MMA matches and will continue to for some time, but the idea that people will stop watching Pro Wrestling and will instead ‘only’ watch MMA is ridiculous. Maybe Boxing will become obsolete, since it’s one dimensional and over-ridden with corruption…but Pro Wrestling Lives, and it’s here to stay.
